Water Filtration

Speaker: Grant Gartrell,Great Lakes Water Authority and Christopher Steary, Great Lakes Water Authority

After an introduction of conventional, direct and in-line filtration, the theoretical aspects of particle removal mechanisms important in water filtration will be discussed followed by typical filter designs so the attendees understand how theory is translated into large-scale filter installations.

Next, filter operational practices will be covered, including filter effluent control modes; filter startup, operation and backwash; and management of filter effluent ripening spikes. Common abnormal filter process conditions (e.g. shortened filter runs, excessive loss of head) will also be discussed to alert the operators to situations that require investigation.

The presentation will also include an overview of regulations applicable to filtration in drinking water treatment, as well as several example process calculations commonly used in filter design and operation such as filter rate, backwash rise rate, unit filter run volume, and filter efficiency.

Participants will be introduced to the following types of calculations:

  • L/D ratio for filter media configuration design
  • Filter rate
  • Backwash rise rate
  • Unit filter run volume
  • Filtration efficiency

Participants will be familiar with the following topics at the end of this webinar:

  • The difference between conventional, direct and in-line filtration
  • Particle removal mechanisms dominant in drinking water filtration
  • Typical filter designs that have proven success in drinking water filtration
  • Filter media characteristics critical to adequate turbidity removal
  • Operational factors that affect filtration
  • Filter effluent turbidity ripening spike management techniques
  • Filter backwashing procedures and monitoring techniques
  • Filter operational troubleshooting

Instructions for joining the webinar will be sent upon registration.
